Construction and installation of substations

We handle the construction and installation of your substation under one roof – with our own installation teams and end-to-end technical responsibility.

All-inclusive

All under one roof: from planning through to construction and commissioning

The construction and installation phase is crucial to the quality, adherence to deadlines and success of a substation project. As a main contractor, WT Energiesysteme relies on a high degree of in-house execution: with its own installation teams, in-depth technical expertise and close integration of engineering, procurement, construction, installation and commissioning. Because these stages – from planning through construction to commissioning – are closely interlinked, interfaces and inefficiencies are reduced – to the benefit of both the schedule and the final outcome.

Network nodes

What substations are used for

Substations are key hubs in the electricity grid. Their role is to transform electrical energy between different voltage levels in order to transmit, switch and distribute electricity efficiently. It is only by stepping up the voltage from medium voltage to higher voltage levels that the energy generated can be transmitted economically over long distances. Substations are therefore an indispensable part of an efficient and stable energy transmission system.

Complete technical specifications

Primary and secondary technology, all from a single source

We undertake the primary technical installation of AIS and GIS switchgear, power transformers and high-voltage equipment, as well as the complete secondary systems – including protection, control and telecontrol systems. The installation and technical construction of the electrical system are carried out on the basis of a standardised system concept. In this way, we deliver turnkey 110 kV substations that can be reliably planned and economically implemented. From new builds and the expansion of existing networks through to construction in compliance with regulatory requirements, our range of services covers the entire scope of the project – we assist with the necessary planning permission process as well as the subsequent commissioning.

Step by step to the substation

Construction and installation of a substation: a 10-step process

From setting up the site to commissioning, all trades work closely together. The typical project workflow is divided into the following steps:

Start of construction

Setting up the construction site and commencing work on site.

Civil Engineering / Foundations

Earthworks and site preparation.

Concrete and foundation work

Construction of foundations for plant and buildings.

Delivery of large components

Transport and installation of transformers and switchgear.

Start of the electrical installation

Commencement of primary and secondary technical installation.

Completion of the electrical installation

Completion of cabling, protection, control and telecontrol systems.

Completion of the construction works

Fence, gate, paths, transformer station access road and other outdoor facilities.

Exams

Technical inspections and functional tests of the system.

Acceptance

Joint handover and acceptance by the customer.

Connection

Connection to the mains and commissioning.

Our own teams

A high level of personal involvement: DIY installation

With three in-house electrical installation teams, we construct at least half of our substations ourselves. We carry out the secondary electrical installation work through our subsidiary F&W – using around 90 to 95 per cent of our own resources and largely without external subcontractors. This ensures consistent quality, reliable deadlines and end-to-end responsibility across all areas of electrical engineering.

In-house production

Control cabinets manufactured in-house

We manufacture our control cabinets in-house at our Riesa site. We consult with customers at an early stage regarding their specific requirements – for example, for plant operators, parking management systems or metering point operators – and incorporate these at no extra cost. Every transformer, every switchgear assembly and every piece of equipment is integrated in such a way that the system is tailored precisely to your project.

Consistently reliable

Operation, Maintenance and Service

Even after commissioning, we remain by your side: from the safe operation of substations and planned maintenance to a rapid response in the event of a fault. Our focus is on reliable protection of the plant and stable operation within the electricity grid – ensuring that your energy infrastructure remains efficient in the long term.
