With its commissioning on May 13, 2026, the second construction phase of the Beuna substation was successfully connected to the grid. This marks the completion of the site’s expansion and lays the foundation for one of Germany’s largest grid-connected battery energy storage systems.
The facility connects the 110- and 31.5-kV voltage levels. It consists of a total of four power transformers, each with a capacity of 63 MVA, as well as several medium-voltage switchgear units. The high connected load capacity allows for the flexible transfer of large amounts of energy between battery storage systems and the power grid.
The large-scale storage facility connected to the site is currently one of the largest battery energy storage systems connected to the power grid in Germany. Such storage systems are playing an increasingly important role in the energy transition. They capture excess energy from wind and solar farms, store it, and make it available again when needed. This allows for better alignment between generation and consumption, reduces grid bottlenecks, and strengthens the security of supply.
The groundwork for future expansion was laid as early as the first construction phase. Thanks to this forward-looking planning, work during the second construction phase was carried out efficiently, and disruptions to the portion of the facility already in operation were kept to a minimum.
The system architecture was also designed for scalability from the outset. By connecting the transformer bays via coupling bays, the infrastructure can be flexibly adapted to future requirements and further developed over time.
Beuna thus serves as a prime example of the next stage in the energy transition. In addition to connecting wind and solar farms to the grid, battery storage systems are becoming increasingly important for making renewable energy available as needed. The substation serves as the central grid connection for this purpose and creates the conditions necessary to safely integrate large amounts of energy into the power grid.
We would like to thank everyone involved for their dedicated collaboration and the successful completion of this project.
