Why is a 380-kV substation part of the highway for the energy transition?

Why is the 380-kV level becoming increasingly important? Henriko Peplow explains the role of extra-high voltage in power generation, consumption, and grid expansion.

Many people associate a substation with transformers and switchgear. In reality, however, 380 kV substations fulfill a much greater task.

They connect generation and consumption. They ensure that large amounts of energy can be transported safely over long distances.

While regional grids handle distribution, the 380 kV level forms the backbone of the German transmission grid.

Henriko Peplow explains: “We can only transport the higher power capacities via the transmission grid.”

With the expansion of offshore wind farms, large photovoltaic systems, battery storage systems and data centers, the need for powerful extra high voltage infrastructure continues to grow.

That is why we are investing specifically in our 380 kV business division and, with our Rostock Papendorf location, are creating the basis for further growth.
