Safety from the very beginning—even underground

Learn about the technical requirements and solutions behind each substation project.

When it comes to building substations, many people first think of complex technology and heavy-haul transport. But at some construction sites, another challenge lies hidden beneath the surface: historical explosive ordnance.

In certain areas such as former military training grounds, bombing ranges, or historic battlefields it is necessary to verify that the area is free of unexploded ordnance. Only then can construction begin.

The survey is usually conducted by the relevant authorities. It is based on historical research, old maps, and aerial photographssuch as those taken by the United States. These show where bombs struck in the past.
