20 MW, 50 MWh Battery Storage Facility in Oberndorf

Find out what the topping-out ceremony in Oberndorf means for WT Energiespeicher and what tasks the team is taking on in the construction of the 20 MW storage facility.

On October 1, 2026, we celebrated the topping out ceremony for the battery storage system in Oberndorf together with Stadtwerke Schweinfurt GmbH and the project partners. With an output of 20 MW and a capacity of 50 MWh, a large stand alone storage facility is being built here.

For WT Energiespeicher GmbH, this is a special milestone:
It is the first battery storage project within the WT Group that the WT Energiespeicher team has now moved into the construction phase.

WT Energiespeicher is taking on the role of system integrator and BoP contractor (“Balance of Plant”) for this project. We are responsible for planning and implementing the infrastructure required for operation, from civil engineering planning and civil engineering work to the integration of the plant technology, commissioning tests, commissioning and final acceptance.

“For WT Energiespeicher, this project is something special. Our aim is to think about and implement a battery storage project holistically, from planning and construction to system integration and commissioning. Especially with large battery storage systems, the interaction of many different disciplines is crucial. In the end, many individual technical systems have to become one functioning overall system. This is exactly where we see our strength.” Heiko Richter, WT Energiespeicher

What is particularly exciting is the question of what role the 20 MW/50 MWh storage system will take on in the future and what experience Stadtwerke Schweinfurt wants to gain from it.

“With the large scale battery storage system in Oberndorf, we are actively shaping the energy infrastructure of tomorrow. The project creates additional flexibility in the power system and expands our expertise in an important field of the future. Together with our partners, we are taking responsibility for a modern and future proof energy supply in the region.” @Thomas Kästner, Stadtwerke Schweinfurt GmbH

With the project in Oberndorf near Schweinfurt, we as the WT Group are gaining important practical experience in implementing battery storage projects and further expanding our expertise in this business area. We can also draw on the experience of the WT Group from more than 250 substations already implemented. The combination of system integration, grid connection and energy infrastructure forms an important basis for our work on future battery storage projects.

A special milestone for WT Energiespeicher and an important step on our journey in the energy storage business.
