Modern substations are digital systems

From 110 kV to 380 kV: Digitalization is transforming substation construction. What role will smart networking play in the future?

When many people think of a substation, they picture transformers, overhead lines and switchgear bays.

But modern substations are no longer made up solely of steel and copper. They are increasingly developing into highly digitalized systems in which protection technology, control technology and communication are intelligently interconnected.

Digital communication standards such as IEC 61850 enable the fast and secure exchange of information between the individual components. Intelligent sensors continuously provide condition data and create the basis for condition based maintenance. At the same time, digitalization is also increasing the requirements for cyber security in order to reliably protect critical infrastructure.

Henriko Peplow explains:

“We also build these substations on the same digitalized solution that we have already demonstrated to our customers in the 110 kV sector.”

Digitalization is not only changing the technology of a substation. It also improves transparency during operation, increases security of supply and creates the conditions for a future proof energy infrastructure.

That is why one thing is clear to us: The substation of the future is not only powerful. It is intelligently interconnected.
